Wednesday evening the SCTCC Cyclones men's basketball team hit the road again for another matchup with the St. John's University JV team. This was the second matchup of the season so far against the Johnnies.
The first half saw both teams start out hot from the field as SJU shot 53% FG, including 6 three pointers in the first 20 minutes. The Cyclones countered with a 49% effort from the floor, and matched the Johnnies with 6 three pointers made. The back and forth action had the score tied 10 times and 11 lead changes. A late 3 pointer put the halftime score at 47-44 in favor of the Cyclones.
The defense picked up a little bit during a 3 minute span in the 2nd half, which took the Cylcone lead from 52-51 to 66-58. The teams traded baskets until a 15-5 run, highlighted by 4 steals from point guard Jimmie McAfee, extended the lead to 16 for SCTCC. From there the visiting Cyclones cruised to the 94-82 win.
In another solid effort, sophomore Shariff Silas led the Cylcones in the scoring column with 25 points. Kyle Williams added 21 as well. The story of the game may have been the play off the bench, where SCTCC had a 39-4 advantage in scoring over the Johnnies. Keshawn Sutton and Zach Gesicki both pitched in 11 points off the bench.
The win moves the Cyclone men to a 6-3 record on the season. Two games remain this week as the team returns to Central Lakes College for the Winter Classic. Friday at 4pm vs Rainy River and Saturday at 6pm vs CLC.
