Cyclones Finish 4-0 at MCAC Crossover Tournament
In day one of the MCAC Crossover Tournament, the St Cloud Technical and Community College faced Northland Technical and Community College and defeated the Pioneers 3-0; 25-23, 25-13, 25-17. Leading the offense, Kalie Jergens, first year outside hitter from Becker, earned 9 kills, followed by Caitlin Walser-Deuel, first year middle from Big Lake, with 6 kills. First year setters, Kalli Mathiasen from Apollo and Ally Bushendorf from Eau Claire, both contributed 15 set assists. Chelsea Schroeder, first year defensive specialist from Rocori, led in digs with 12.
The second match of the day, the Cyclones defeated Itasca Community College 3-1; 17-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22. Jergens led in kills with 18, followed by Chloe Callahan, second year outside hitter from Maple Lake, with 10. Setters, Mathiasen and Bushendorf, earned a combined 45 set assists and 3 services aces. Callahan also contributed 5 service aces. Schroeder led in digs with 23 and Deuel added 3 blocks.
Day two of the MCAC Crossover Tournament started with Mesabi Range where they overcame the Norse in a 5 set battle; 3-2, 26-24, 22-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-9. Karlee Kern, first year outside hitter from BBE, led in kills with 15, followed by Kaitlyn Johnson, first year rightside hitter from Crosby-Ironton, with 9. Setters, Mathiasen and Bushendorf, earned a combined 45 set assists and 7 service aces. Callahan and Payton Thompson, second year defensive specialist from Big Lake, held the defense with 17 digs each.
In the last match of the tournament, the Cyclones faced Rainy River Community College earning a 3-1 victory; 25-18, 25-17, 24-26, 25-18. The Cyclones broke the team record for services aces in a match with 27, (6.8 per set). Bushendorf and Thompson led in aces with 6 each. Leading the offense was McKayla Quade, first year middle from Paynesville, and Mathiasen with 10 kills apiece, followed by Jergens with 9 kills. Kern led in digs with 16.
The Cyclones host their last home match of the 2016 season on Wednesday, October 26 versus Anoka-Ramsey, 6:30pm at the Whitney Center.
